7.What eras of music will you be playing?
The age of the music we play will broadly break down into the following groups:-
Current/Recent Music (Last 3-4 years)
Older music (5-7 years)
Classics (7 years plus)
Our experience has shown us that the best way to ensure a wide audience is to focus on current and recent music (i.e. 3-4 years). This policy has also produced success for other mainstream stations. The logic behind this is, whilst listeners at the bottom of our target audience may find it difficult to relate to older tracks, listeners at the top of our age range will still be familiar with the new music because of recent success and publicity.
Furthermore, playing larger proportions of older music is difficult because, as studio technology moves on, “Gold” tracks often sound out of place next to new tracks where the recording quality has been much better. Other stations find it easier to play older music because their focus will be solely on “memorable” tracks. However, as our focus is on tracks with a positive message, we won’t have the choice available.
